“Get to know me,” said the flowers

One of the my favorite aspects of working with flowers is getting to know them. It requires slowing down and full presence, two skills I am working to cultivate in all areas of my life! From processing to designing, all the way to observing over time, there is so much more to a flower’s personality than meets the eye. Sight is obviously the most common way to consume such gorgeous beings, but tapping into our other senses deepens and improves understanding.

How do they smell? Are they sticky or milky or soft or prickly? Is time their friend: opening up before winding down? Do they dance? Are they leading ladies or the best friend? Do they have an energetic pull you cannot deny?

You don’t have to guess. If you listen, they will tell you!

Here are some recent showstoppers and words I use to describe ‘em.

Zinnias

Zinnia Hardy, layered, puckered, accented by stars, sherbet, dome

Anthurium Veiny, ridgy, symmetrical, 3D printed, firm, dramatic

Spider Mums Spindly, firework, curling claw, bold, cheap

Blushing Bride Abominable snowman, party of 4, Christmas in July, pure sweetness

Dahlia Curled, tuberous, heavy headed, boba straw stems, stunning

Forget Me Not Teeny, sunburst center, hairy stems, precious and pathetic all in one
